Stem Cells and The Blood
- After
more than 50 years of research, scientist have developed sufficient understanding
to use hematopoietic stem cells in therapy.
- No
other stem cell, embryonic, fetal or adult has attained such a status.
- Among
the first clinical uses were the treatment of cancers of the blood: leukemia
and lymphoma.
- Bone
marrow transplant is done now as a transplant of hematopoietic stem cells
collected from the peripheral circulation of a matched donor (typically sister
or brother).
- Treatment
of some inherited blood disorders (such as different types of inherited anemia
and inborn errors of metabolism) and autoimmune disorders can greatly benefit
from stem cell research.
